4 Tips for Creating Business Connections in Online Forums

forum threadToday’s blog comes as a guest post from Eliza Morgan, a very active participant in the PRWeb community.

Every one of us has used online forums for various reasons. They are great spaces to search for information, ask and answer questions, converse about niche topics, and comment on particular online content. However, not many bloggers or other web professionals take the time to use forums to benefit their own business strategies. And, unfortunately, many online marketers who do post in forums can end up being more of an annoyance than a significant contributor to the conversation. Learning how to use forums to your benefit without turning people off to your brand, can be a great way to market yourself and your products online. Read on for some tips on how to use forums to better your business:

1. Ask useful questions.

One of the best ways to get noticed on a forum is to ask questions that other people are searching for answers to. This will plant the seed for a conversation that could potentially make your post more and more visible over time. When asking questions in a forum, try to stick to topics that you understand fairly well, so you ask a relevant question and avoid being overly corrected or looked-over.

2. Share your expertise.

Instead of simply using forums to search for information, try taking some time once in a while to search for questions that only you can answer. If there are particular insights you can provide on a topic that you are not already seeing in that forum, go ahead and share your perspective. Users will appreciate you taking the time to answer, and they may look into your brand further if they begin to trust your knowledge.

3. Don’t peddle your brand.

The worst thing you can do in a forum is leave some irrelevant response to a discussion thread and then post your information below, hoping someone will click on it and give you a few extra hits. While this may work on a limited, short-term basis, no one appreciates blatant marketing when it doesn’t have to do with their needs. Make sure to be honest in your activities on forums. Post in discussion you care about, and provide content that will propel the conversation and shed light on new information. This is the real way to garner long-term hits and followers.

4. Make your links visible.

If you do post something in a forum, and you feel it is contributing significantly to the conversation, leave your information in the post. There is no need to request that people visit your website or check out your new blog post. If they are interested in what you have to say, users will follow your links. The trick is to make sure your links are clearly visible. Include them in your forum bio and paste them below any comments you leave in a forum.

Forums can be a tricky avenue to get traffic from. There is a lot of value you can gain from users who share similar interests, but as you mentioned, becoming too spammy is a no go. We’ve been able to find a pretty good balance of attracting captive users by answering questions in a relevant fashion in forums.
